Behind the creative teams
Many people talk of the benefits of intellectual work individually and in groups, advantages and disadvantages, but few people has to think about what kind of environments and what kind of groups.
Without wishing to contest the rights of way to the convenience of thought seems to me an interesting focus on creativity and decision making in a single discipline teams and teams from various disciplines within it, that is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams.
What I find interesting and important to address is the complex psychological issues that arise when we face teams composed of members with similar knowledge or experience and diverse. Among them are the multidisciplinary teams and interdisciplinary teams.
Over the years there has been a breakthrough in the understanding of social cognition and group processes, and although the change and the characteristics of the groups suffer a constant evolution in its composition can see advantages and disadvantages in their constitution.
In some cases, this understanding has led some psychologists to emerge prepared to lead interdisciplinary teams of scientific research as well as other areas in which the diversity of knowledge is a salient reality.
The confirmation bias and the integration of new information on pre-established mental schemes are among the factors that alter the functioning of multidisciplinary teams.
But here are a few differences:
In a multidisciplinary team the work is characterized by the aggregation of the work of different experts, i.e., members who are in the team with their expertise to solve problems and then return to their own desktops, virtually unchanged for the collaboration.
This type of work is much like the work performed by a group of consultants from an organization that faced with a legislative amendment, is presenting his “creative card” to solve a problem. The frequent result is to have to find a specialist in translation and integration of various disciplines.
The interdisciplinary team, by contrast, is characterized by synergies among experts of a particular topic.
In trying to address the creativity in these groups compared to the overall work finds that, while innovation is one of the potential benefits of interdisciplinary teams, the groups appear to be less creative than individuals.
If a group is to hear a suggestion of a creative person, the other group members begin to channel their cognitive efforts to listen, instead of spending that energy on their own efforts (e.g. in brainstorming).
They may even forget the ways in which thought, dramatically reducing the benefits of the number of responses generated independent creative thinking.
The fear and apprehension of possible ratings may cause embarrassment in some of the team and ensure that they have options, even though they may be the best, and that is actually the group that most needs to hear.
One role of a facilitator or leader of an interdisciplinary team is taking the initiative to enter the information shared to encourage others to do the same, and to broaden the debate on an issue to allow discussion of all relevant information.
This creativity (the group) can also be enhanced if the generation of ideas is made individually and then shared with the entire group.
“Meeting only after the homework done”
This creates a favorable environment for what might seem to departure strange ideas, and gives due importance to the knowledge expressed by several members of the interdisciplinary team.
Today it still seems a less acceptable investment in interdisciplinary teams, especially when it comes to innovation, because often witnessed the meeting of a group of experts from the same area, forgetting that all these areas have connections with other areas of the organization.
However, such initiatives with interdisciplinary teams, the attitude seems to applaud, to ensure rapid and significant results in innovation.
